Planning a family weekend in Lonavala

Travelling with grandparents and small kids is its own kind of holiday — the plan has to bend around naps, knees, and short attention spans. Here's a relaxed two-day rhythm that works.

A family weekend in Lonavala goes wrong in exactly one way: trying to do too much. Three generations rarely want the same thing at the same time, and a packed sightseeing schedule ends with someone tired and someone cranky. The trick is to make the base comfortable enough that doing very little still feels like a holiday, and to keep outings short and in the cool part of the day.

Pick a base everyone can enjoy

With a mixed-age group, where you stay matters more than what you see. A few things make a real difference: at least one ground-floor bedroom so grandparents don't climb stairs; a kitchen you can actually use, because young kids and elders both eat better with home food on their own schedule; a safe, private outdoor space where children can run without you watching the gate; and enough room that the early risers and the late sleepers don't collide. Our villa was set up with exactly this group in mind — a ground-floor bedroom, a modular kitchen, a fenced garden, and a pool that's yours alone.

A relaxed two-day plan

Friday evening

Arrive by early evening so the kids have daylight to explore and everyone can settle before dinner. Order in from a local place, or cook something simple in the kitchen. An early night sets up a good Saturday.

Saturday morning

Slow start — coffee for the adults, pool or garden for the kids. Around 10 AM, do one easy outing while the day is still cool. Ryewood Park is a gentle pick for families: flat paths, big trees, and space to run. In monsoon, Bhushi Dam is a hit with older kids, though it gets crowded and slippery, so hold little ones' hands and go early. Be back by lunch for a swim and, ideally, a nap for whoever needs one.

Saturday afternoon and evening

This is the do-nothing block, and it's the part families remember. Pool time, board games, a long tea. If there's a birthday in the group, the evening is the moment — cake on the rooftop, a bit of music, an early dinner. Keep loud outdoor music down by about 10:30 PM out of respect for the neighbours; indoors, carry on as late as you like.

Sunday

One last easy outing if anyone's up for it — a short drive to a viewpoint, or a stop for Lonavala's famous chikki and fudge on the way out. Otherwise, a final swim and a relaxed lunch before an 11 AM checkout (we can usually stretch it a little if you ask).

Small things that make family trips easier

  • Carry basic medicines and any kids' essentials — the nearest pharmacy is in town, a few minutes away, but it's easier to have them on hand.
  • Ask about an in-house cook if you'd rather not cook for a big group — simple, familiar food keeps everyone happy.
  • Build in pool supervision — a private pool is wonderful, but small children should never be left alone near it.
  • Don't over-schedule. Pick one outing a day. The garden and pool do more for a family trip than a third viewpoint.
